Maria Chen Pascual: Re-fashion
6 May – 17 July 2005
The designer Maria Pascual first trained at Parsons in New York, where she won the Hermès menswear design scholarship, then completed an MA at Central Saint Martins in London. She worked in New York at Anne Klein, Isabel Toledo, and Joan Vass before continuing towards a research degree at the Royal College of Art in 1998.
Maria’s artistic approach to fashion has seen her involvement in exhibitions at Fanclub Amsterdam, Circuit at the MACBA Barcelona and Hobbypop Museum, Düsseldorf. For London Fashion Week AW04 Maria has chosen to stage a combined multi-media presentation with two of the fashion and art industry’s most respected creative talents, Zandra Rhodes and Andrew Logan, a move originating from her ongoing collaboration with artist Andrew Logan on a collection of accessories and show pieces inspired by each season’s imagery.
Maria immerses herself in the cross-currents of history, art, photography, and music. Her starting point involves the exploration of the once, high school outsider, who has matured into their own distinctive style. This explores the customer who has never been comfortable as one of the crowd. Known for her darkly romantic spirit, Maria’s development of original fabric techniques and print, emphasize the layered silhouette in a combination of textures and techniques. This experimental use of cut and shape produces the soft, sculptural silhouettes that form the foundation of the collections.
