Rob Dunne and Daniel Staincliffe: Unknown Monsters
21 February – 30 March 2014
Unknown Monsters is a visual arts experiment designing hoaxes, carried out in Chengdu, China, and inspired by research into hoaxes, social psychology and mythology. Unknown Monsters include the Chengdu Sasquatch, Funan River Mermaid, Leshan Prophecy Tablets, ancient Tibetan Prediction Rods and a fictional artist – named as an anagram of Unknown Monsters – whose terrible works based on mythology and conspiracy theories spoof art competitions. The project documents these hoaxes and their production, along with records of the artists’ correspondence with academic and governmental institutions and interactions with the public, all concerned with the hoaxes’ dissemination as fact.
